About the Project

"We are so grateful for the grant we received from the Authority’s Urban Grant Program. We are working to provide equitable access to healthy food in San Jose and cultivate leaders in this mission. And the funding from this grant will help us achieve this goal.”

Roberto Gil , La Mesa Verde Director

Sacred Heart Community Service’s La Mesa Verde (LMV) program is a network of urban gardeners that uses innovative solutions to build a sustainable food system in San Jose and the broader Bay Area. Their approach draws on agroecology to bridge knowledge, build an active community and implement organic gardening practices. The Open Space Authority grant helped cover the cost of purchasing materials needed for the urban gardens, staff time and community-building efforts. This grant-funded project included bilingual garden education workshops, seed and seedling distribution, garden bed installation for community members and an annual Summer Garden Tour.
