About the Project

“Working together and encouraging one another has created a culture of curiosity and positivity on campus. Or, in the words of one kindergartener said as he tasted a healthy snack that he had created, “My heart is beeping because this is so good!””

Kevin Keegan , Principal

Supported by an Open Space Authority grant, the Pomeroy Sustainable Harvests & Investing in Nature Education (SHINE) program serves 300 students in grades TK-5 in the City of  Santa Clara. SHINE provides hands-on, nature-based education and recreation to underserved students, including Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED), English Language Learners (ELL) and Special Education (SPED) populations. The program integrates Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards and emphasizes the benefits of eating locally and sustainably. SHINE also includes a Charlie Cart Outdoor Kitchen System and ongoing support for long-term sustainability and replication at other schools.
